Dear <PREFERRED_FIRST_NAME>:
Your academic performance in your first semester here at Colorado State University (CSU) raises serious concerns about how you are doing academically and personally. Earning a first semester GPA of 0.0 is a clear indication that things are not going well for you at CSU and that you may be struggling significantly with your transition to college. I am writing today to encourage you to consider your options carefully for the Spring 2016 semester.
While CSU remains available to provide support and wants you to succeed, it is important for you to understand the impact of your poor academic performance. Historically, half of all students who return the semester after earning a 0.0 GPA earn another 0.0 in their second semester, and one out of six students who start with a 0.0 earn a degree from CSU.
You were admitted to CSU because we saw your potential based on your prior academic achievements. We believe that potential is still there, but you are now in one of the most difficult positions academically that a student can face. We recommend talking with those around you who can provide support and advice -- such as members of your family, academic advisor, or other trusted friend or mentor -- to help you decide if it would be better for you to continue at CSU next semester or take some time away before returning.
If you want to continue next semester, we strongly encourage you to develop an action plan for academic success and to discuss the plan with your academic advisor or academic support coordinator. If you do not know who your academic advisor is, look on RAMweb or call the academic department of your major. If you are undeclared, call CASA at 970-491-7095 to get your advisor contact information. Your advisor can help you connect with appropriate resources and create a plan to begin repairing your GPA.
If you decide NOT to return for the Spring 2016 semester, you must drop your courses on RAMweb by January 18, 2016 to avoid tuition and fee assessment. If you are living on campus, you must make arrangements with your residence hall immediately to vacate. If you want to take the spring semester off and return next fall, you can sign up for planned leave at http://registrar.colostate.edu/planned-leave (deadline to apply for planned leave is the Thursday prior to the start of classes each term).
Please know that we remain committed to helping you achieve your academic goals and graduate from Colorado State University.
Sincerely,
Gaye G. DiGregorio

-
Serious changes need to be made to improve your academic performance. If your cumulative GPA remains below a 2.0 for two consecutive regular semesters, you will be academically dismissed from CSU.
